The City of New York’s Police Department reported 8,620 auto crashes and 22 traffic-related fatalities in October 2022 alone. But other places pose a safety risk to those who use the roads. The New York State Department of Health (DOH) lists the following counties as some places in the Empire State where you are most likely to be involved in a severe car accident. If you or a loved one has been involved in a motor vehicle accident in New York, please contact a car accident lawyer at Hiller Comerford Injury & Disability Law.
Erie County
Buffalo and Erie County see eight individuals die and 71 hospitalized in traffic-related incidents every two months. According to the DOH’s 2012-2014 records, 49 people die each year, and 426 receive inpatient treatment at a hospital. Another 7,190 individuals visit emergency rooms annually for care after a car crash.
The DOH identifies motor vehicle crashes as the fifth leading cause of hospitalization and death for Erie County residents.
Nassau County
Home to Long Beach and Freeport, Nassau County can also boast one of the state’s more significant totals of motor vehicle fatalities and injuries. The Department of Health says the county averages 81 deaths per year and 1,337 hospitalizations. Another 12,340 people per year seek medical care at an emergency room following a car wreck.
According to the DOH, car accidents are the fourth leading cause of death and second leading cause of hospitalization in Nassau County.
Kings County and Queens County
Of the five counties encompassing New York City, Kings County and Queens County have some of the worst statistics for car accident injuries and fatalities. According to the DOH, traffic collisions lead to 94 deaths and 1,314 hospitalizations yearly.
Queens County has similar statistics to Kings County. In any given year, according to 2012-2014 Department data, about 93 people die in motor vehicle crashes, and hospitals in Queens County admit another 1,369 individuals as patients.
Richmond County records about 17 traffic deaths per year, and Bronx County sees approximately 48 people die each year in traffic fatalities. In other words, in any given year, more people die in traffic accidents in Kings County alone than in Richmond and Bronx counties combined.
Not All Counties in New York Have Similar Statistics
Albany County records approximately 14 traffic-related deaths yearly and 152 hospitalizations. To the west of Albany County, Schoharie County has even smaller numbers of four deaths and 22 hospitalizations annually.
